The cannon is traditionally fired from Cairo Citadel in Egypt, beside the National Police Museum. Even though it may not be audible anymore, it remains a significant symbol of Ramadan. When my parents or grandparents hear the Maghreb call to prayer, they still say “Yalla el Madfa3 Darab,” signaling the start of the meal.

Historian said ” that tradition began in 1460 during Ramadan. According to the story, Mamluk Sultan Al-zaher received a cannon as a gift from a German friend. When the sultan’s soldiers tested the cannon, it coincided exactly with the Maghreb Call to prayer. Residents interpreted this as a signal to break the fast, which increased the sultan’s popularity. Consequently, it was decided that the cannon would be fired daily throughout the holy month to mark the end of fasting each day. This tradition continued until 1859 when the cannon was fired from Cairo’s Citadel. It then spread to many other Islamic countries.
