Described as one of the greatest minds in human history, he was a polymath in:
– Medicine- Philosophy- Chemistry- Physics- Translation- History- Astronomy
He founded the science of astronomical mathematics. In pharmacy, he established the science of drugs and pharmacology. In geography, he laid the foundations of “historical strata and geology”. He founded the science of minerals and weights, determining the specific weight of many metals, gems, and stones.
He was the pioneer of comparative religion and the methodology of historical scientific research. He founded the science of space. In his book “The Law of Structure and Stars,” he proved the Earth’s spherical shape and its rotation around a tilted axis and the sun, presenting an early concept of gravitational force that preceded the English scientist Isaac Newton.
He was the first to claim that the Earth rotates on its axis a thousand years ago. Without modern tools, he accurately measured Earth’s circumference to 99.7% of today’s measurements. He invented a method to draw maps that depict various terrains on Earth.
He was the first to discover that the speed of light exceeds the speed of sound. He devised seven methods to determine north and south directions. He discovered a mathematical system to determine the beginning of seasons. He authored over 120 books covering all sciences. He accurately determined longitude and latitude lines, among many other significant discoveries.
He developed a device to measure the movements of the sun and moon and invented the cylindrical astrolabe used to observe planets and stars and determine the dimensions of distant bodies and their elevations from Earth’s surface.
He explained phenomena related to fluid flow, tides, and light propagation. He noted that metals expand with heat and contract with cold. He delved into Earth’s formation, its surface composition, earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods.
He mastered several languages, including Arabic, Persian, Khwarizmian, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, and Sanskrit.
George Sarton described him in his book “Introduction to the History of Science” as:”He was a traveler, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, geographer, encyclopedic scientist, and one of the greatest minds of Islam and the world.”
The German orientalist, #Sachau, said:”He is the greatest intellect known to history.”
Arthur Pope affirmed that he was:”One of the greatest thinkers of all ages.”
NASA named one of the moon’s craters after him in 1951. The 10th/11th century AD was named “The Age of Al-Biruni” after him.
He is the Arab Muslim scientist : Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad Al-Biruni..
