Tahtib (Egyptian Arabic: تَحْطِيب, pronounced [tæħˈtiːb])

Tahtib refers to a traditional stick-fighting martial art originally named “fan a’nazaha wa-tahtib” (the art of being straight and honest through the use of a stick). Its original martial version eventually evolved into an Egyptian folk dance utilizing a wooden stick. Commonly referred to in English as a “stick dance,” “cane dance,” “stick-dancing game,” or as ritual mock combat accompanied by music, Tahtib currently represents both martial practice and performance art. Predominantly practiced today in Upper Egypt, a Nubian form of Tahtib is regularly performed for tourists in Aswan.
Typically measuring approximately four feet in length, the stick utilized in Tahtib is known as an asa, asaya, assaya, or naboot. Often, participants vigorously swing the stick in expansive figure-eight motions across their bodies with impressive velocity, causing noticeable disturbances in the surrounding air.
Initially reserved for male performers, female variants subsequently emerged. Within one form, females dress as males and mimic their movements. Meanwhile, alternative interpretations display reduced aggressiveness and feature increased flirtatiousness. Known as ra’s el assaya (dance of the stick), this variation is occasionally integrated into cabaret or Raqs Sharqi performances. Generally characterized by a more delicate stick design, this particular instrument exhibits a curvature reminiscent of a cane and is often enhanced with vivid metal-colored foils or sparkling sequences. Attired in simplistic Baladi gowns, performers skillfully balance the cane on their heads, hips, or shoulders during renditions.
